UH second in
Sheriff golf tourney

Host Hawaii finished in second place, eight strokes behind winner West Florida, in the 11-team Stan Sheriff Invitational golf tournament yesterday at the Ko'olau Golf Club in Kaneohe.

Scott Carlyle led the way for the Rainbows with a 1-under-par 73 in the third and final round that gave him seventh place at 227 in the individual standings.

Michael Harris of Michigan was the medalist at 223 after a closing 73.

Crusaders move up in poll

The St. Louis School football team moved up eight sports in the Fox Sports Net Fab 50 high school national rankings yesterday.

The Crusaders (13-1), the only team ranked from Hawaii, rose to 22nd from 30th. In the West Region, St. Louis stayed at No. 5.

UH men spike Alberta

The University of Hawaii men's volleyball team defeated Alberta University of Canada, 15-6, 15-5, 15-9, in an exhibition match last night at Klum Gym.

"I think we looked good and I was pretty pleased," said UH coach Mike Wilton. "The match was over in an hour, which surprised me because Alberta's a good team. Maybe they were somewhat jet-lagged."

Baseball season-ticket sale

University of Hawaii baseball season tickets are on sale through Dec. 10 at the UH ticket office or by telephone order.

The ticket office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center. Fans may order by phone at 944-BOWS (2697) between the hours of 9 a.m and 4 p.m.

Prices for the blue and orange levels are $185 plus $15 premium seat scholarship donation. Red level seats cost $145 for adults and $120 for students ages 4-18, senior citizens and UH students.

UH men 17th in swim poll

The Hawaii men's swimming and diving team, unbeaten in nine meets this season, dropped to 17th place from 16th in the latest national rankings of the College Swimming Coaches Association of America. The UH women, 10-0, are unranked.

In the College Quick-25 posting of fastest times, Hawaii's Nick Folker is No. 1 in the 50 and 100 freestyle events and teammate David Jenkins is No. 3.

Jenkins also is seventh in the 200 freestyle and Simon Thirsk is second in the 100 backstroke.

The UH men's relay teams are No. 1 in the 200 free and 200 medley, No. 4 in the 400 medley and No. 5 in the 400 free.

UH's Lori Thomas climbed to third from 15th on the women's 500 free list.

Coaching honor to Aoki

Pacific Lutheran University's Kevin Aoki, a 1980 graduate of Iolani School, was named the Tachikara/AVCA Division III West Region volleyball Coach of the Year.

Aoki guided the Lutes to their first-ever Northwest Conference volleyball title with a 13-3 record. They won one match in the NCAA West Region tournament before bowing to UC San Diego and finishing 20-6 overall.
