Oahu sales execs fete HPU's Wright

The Sales and Marketing Executives of Honolulu, Inc., has named Chatt G. Wright as 1998 Salesperson of the Year. Wright, president of Hawaii Pacific University, will be honored Feb. 4 at a luncheon at the Hilton Hawaiian Village.

HPU had just 57 students and a budget of $212,000 when Wright joined the school in 1972. It is now the largest private college in the state with 8,500 students and a budget of $64 million.

Wright is a former president and chief executive of Queen's Health Systems.

Aston's parent buys more properties

ResortQuest International Inc., parent of Aston Resorts & Hotels in Hawaii and vacation accommodations business in eight mainland states, said today it has acquired four vacation property management businesses on the mainland for $8.5 million in stock and cash.

They are Ridgepine Inc. in Sunriver, Ore.; Ryan's Golden Eagle Management in Big Sky, Mont.; Cove Management Services in Palm Desert, Calif.; and Columbine Management & Real Estate Inc. in Dillon, Colo. The acquisitions add 800 condo and rental home units to the company's portfolio, a 6 percent increase.

Microsoft earnings smash expectations

SEATTLE -- Microsoft Corp., the world's largest software maker, earned $1.98 billion, or 73 cents a share, in the fiscal second quarter ended Dec. 31, the company said today. That's up from $1.13 billion, or 42 cents a share, a year earlier. The company, which announced its earnings after the market closed, crushed expectations of 59 cents a share, according to analysts surveyed by First Call Corp.

Microsoft said its Windows 98 operating system received a big boost from robust sales of personal computers during the holiday shopping season, Bloomberg News reported. The company also said its Office 97 business software continued to generate strong sales.
