Ah Yat a I-AA All-American

NEW YORK - Quarterback Brian Ah Yat, the former Iolani standout who has Montana within a victory of its second straight national title, and 2,000-yard rusher Archie Amerson of Northern Arizona topped the Associated Press' I-AA All-America team that was announced today.

Ah Yat, who threw for 3,615 yards and 42 touchdowns, leads a five-player Montana contingent on the first team. Ah Yat's favorite target, wide receiver Joe Douglass also made the team, along with center Jason Kempfert, guard Mike Agee and linebacker Jason Crebo.

The sophomore from Honolulu completed 61 percent of his passes during the regular season, hitting on 265 of 432 attempts for a 156.3 efficiency rating. Douglass caught 82 passes for 1,469 yards and 19 touchdowns for an offense averaging 40.6 points per game.

In three playoff games, Ah Yat is 80 of 122 for 1,062 yards and nine TDs.

The Grizzlies (14-0) play Marshall (14-0) Saturday for the I-AA championship.

Amerson, averaging 6.2 yards a carry for the division's total offense-leading Lumberjacks, had 2,079 yards and led I-AA in scoring with 26 touchdowns. He was joined in the backfield by VMI's Thomas Haskins, one of five repeaters from last year's team. Haskins ran for 1,704 yards and 15 touchdowns and owns the I-AA career rushing record at 5,355 yards.


Walters captures gold

BOUNTIFUL, Utah - Lt. Col. Terry Walters, M.D., representing the Hawaii Figure Skating Club, won the gold medal in the Adult Gold Ladies Free Skate event last Saturday at the United States Figure Skating Association 1997 Pacific Coast Sectional Championships.

Her 21/2-minute program, set to the music from the movie "Far and Away," was judged best by six of the seven judges.

There were 13 skaters in the event.

Walters, stationed at Tripler Army Medical Center, qualifies for the Adult National Championships at Lake Placid, N.Y., April 17-20.



CARTER, COCKETT AMONG LEADERS

Anthony Carter, the University of Hawaii's 6-foot-2 junior guard, is tied for 14th place with 6.9 assists per game in the latest NCAA men's basketball statistics through Monday's games.

Nani Cockett, a 5-11 junior forward for the Wahine, is tied for 25th place in scoring with a 21.3 points per game average in the latest NCAA women's basketball statistics, also through Monday.



HULA BOWL BIKE RIDE

The second annual Hula Bowl Bike Ride will be held Jan. 19 with a 7:30 a.m. start at Kmart on Salt Lake Boulevard and a finish at Aloha Stadium in time for the football game.

The $25 entry fee includes a game ticket and a T-shirt. The ride is a benefit for the American Lung Association of Hawaii.

The registration deadline is Jan. 8. Riders have the option of a 20-, 30- or 50-kilometer course. Entry forms are available at local bike shops.

Hawaii-Hilo 105, Wayne St. 95: At Hilo's Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium, Rodney Odrick scored 30 points and Merriel Jenkins added 25 to lead the Vulcans past the Wildcats of Wayne, Neb., in the opening round of the Coconut Classic.

In another men's game, Kentucky Wesleyan defeated Rio Grande, 88-67. In a women's game, Cal State Stanislaus beat Rio Grande, 82-75.

BYU-Hawaii 86, Dakota Wesleyan 75: At the Cannon Activities Center in Laie, Ionatana Enosa scored a career-high 32 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead the Seasiders.

Enosa also set school records for most blocks in a career, breaking the record of 129 set by Bruce Koelliker.

The victory keeps the Seasiders (6-0) unbeaten and gives them the best start in team history.
