In 1962, the Sunday Times in London published Terry Luke's dramatic photographs taken when a high-altitude hydrogen bomb test over Johnston Atoll, more than 800 miles from Hawaii, lit up the night sky over Honolulu. The electric blue color from the bomb changed to a bright yellow, then a deep red.
When people talked about the Star-Bulletin, they always mentioned that they knew Terry Luke. When people wanted to know where to go for the best fried oysters in town, they asked Terry Luke. When people needed advice about travel, about cars and especially about taking pictures, they asked Terry Luke.He was friend, mentor, uncle, surrogate father, lunch companion, but most of all a journalist.
The Star-Bulletin photographer, who died Sunday at age 68, left a legacy of images that told the stories of his life's times. Here, we present a few of those images as a tribute to the man.
