Feeling overwhelmed trying to keep your bathroom clean? Follow these quick tips to stay ahead of the mold and mildew.

Tub and Shower

Wipe them dry after each use to discourage mildew and prevent buildup of mineral deposits and soap scum. To remove mildew and stains from your tub, shower and tiles, wet the surfaces with water, then spray them with a solution of one cup chlorine bleach mixed into a quart of water.

Keep bath towels and fabric shower curtains out of spray range.

To clean caulking around bathtubs, use rubbing alcohol; it also shines chrome and glass. A bleach solution (a quarter cup to a gallon of water) will also clean caulk.

Try cleaning grungy-looking wall tile grout with full-strength vinegar instead of bathroom or kitchen cleaner. An old toothbrush is handy for cleaning the grout.

Toilet Bowl

Use a toilet bowl cleaner weekly. To remove stubborn stains, pour bleach into the bowl.

To clean the toilet bowl while you're away, pour in a quarter cup of liquid bleach and leave it until you return. CAUTION: If you're already using a tank-held cleaner that's released when the toilet is flushed, check the package to see if the cleaner contains bleach or ammonia before using a cleaner. To be safe, don't use any combination of bleach, ammonia and cleaners; they might react chemically and produce a toxic gas.

To avoid clogging and odors, pour a cup of baking soda down the bowl weekly.

Tub

For stubborn stains, scour with automatic dishwasher detergent or rub with a cloth dipped in vinegar.

To remove rust stains from porcelain surfaces, make a paste of cream of tartar and hydrogen peroxide. Spread it over the stain and scrub lightly with a brush. Let the paste dry and rinse it off.

Harsh abrasive cleaners or scouring pads scratch fiberglass, making it harder to keep clean. Instead, use a fiberglass cleanser or baking soda and damp sponge.

Sweep or vacuum the bathroom floor weekly. Mop it with a damp mop or sponge, using a disinfectant cleaner.

To restore grayed grout, scrub the floor with a tile and grout cleaner.
