WEBSTER'S defines the word "mother" as "a woman who has borne a child; a woman as she is related to her child or children; a stepmother; an adoptive mother; a mother-in-law," or the "female parent."

But we know mom is more than those sterile descriptions. She's the one you adore when she makes your favorite meal to cheer you, the one you hate when she scolds you for messing up. She's the one who calls twice a day from her home in Arizona or drops by from her apartment around the corner just as you're getting in the shower. She is young, she is old, she is middle-age. She is thin, plump, short, tall. She is mom, mommy, ma, mammy, makuahine, okaasan, nana.

In celebration of Mother's Day, May 12, the Star-Bulletin today begins this contest, patterned after the song that begins "M is for...".

Just fill in the blanks next to each letter in the word "mother". You may be creative, funny, clever and witty as you like, just so long as you're sincere.

The contest is for children of all ages in the following categories:

Mail your entry to Mom, Honolulu Star-Bulletin, P.O. Box 3080, Honolulu 96802 or fax it to 523-8509.

Winners in each category will receive $100 to celebrate Mother's Day. They and their moms will be pictured in the Star-Bulletin along with their winning entries on May 7. The contest deadline is April 30. One entry per person.
