Question: My wife and I work long hours, and we're thinking of adopting another cat to keep our cat Peaches company. Are two better than one?

Answer: More often than not, the answer is yes. Some animals do well in pairs as long as they don't mind sharing you with another. But getting a new pet should never be taken lightly, as added care, cost and other considerations will be involved.

And remember: Another friend provides some companionship but is never a replacement for you. The quality time you spend with Peaches is essential to her happiness.

The best time to welcome a new pet to the family is a weekend when you have a couple of days free. Reward both cats for behaving well with praise, attention and treats. This transition time is important and can set the tone for the rest of their relationship.
