Oahu should start seeing gusty northeast winds and rain this afternoon as Tropical Depression Felicia moves across the islands, the National Weather Service says.

As the storm approaches Oahu, forecasters expect winds at 20 to 35 mph with gusts to 45 mph tonight and into tomorrow.

Forecasters warn that Felicia could still produce heavy rainfall and flash flooding, as well as strong gusty winds. The strongest winds can be expected near higher terrain which can accelerate winds downslope, they said today.

Rain showers from Felicia will reach Oahu later today, forecasters said. The showers will likely become heavier and more frequent during the day today as the system moves through.

A flash flood watch is in effect for Oahu through tomorrow afternoon. In addition, there is a high surf warning, with surf along east-facing shores of Oahu continuing at warning levels of 15 feet through today, then gradually subsiding tomorrow.

Officials urge residents to take the following precautions:

» Secure loose outdoor objects that could be blown around by strong winds, or bring them indoors this evening.

» Have batteries and flashlights on hand in case the power fails.

» People in flood prone areas should prepare in case heavy rainfall materializes.

» Listen for possible warnings.

» Small craft should return to port or seek safe harbor.

» Monitor NOAA weather radio and local news outlets for official storm information. Listen for possible changes to the forecast.
