A 47-year-old man died early today after his mo-ped crashed in Kaimuki.

Shortly before 12:38 a.m., a red mo-ped was Koko Head-bound on Waialae Avenue near 14th Avenue when the driver drifted off the roadway and hit a bus stop sign and wooden pole, police said.

The driver, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown from the mo-ped and landed in the street, police said. He was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition, where he later died.

Police have determined that speed may have been a factor, and that alcohol was not involved.
