Labrador retrievers and German shepherds were the most popular purebred dogs in Honolulu last year.

According to American Kennel Club registration statistics, the two breeds tied for No. 1.

Chihuahuas placed third, followed by Pomeranians. Dachshunds and golden retrievers tied for fifth place.

Nationally, the club said today that the Labrador retriever was the most popular purebred dog in America for the 19th consecutive year. It was followed in order by the German shepherd, the Yorkshire terrier, the golden retriever and the beagle.
