Hawaiian Electric Co. has issued some emergency tips in advance of a possible tsunami later this morning. HECO urges residents to:
>> Make sure they have a battery-powered radio on hand.
>> Have extra batteries for flashlights and other equipment should power go out.
>> Turn off and unplug any unnecessary electrical equipment in a house in the inundation zone.
>> Turn the freezer and refrigerator to their coldest settings. If power goes out, this will keep food fresher longer.
>> Make arrangements for any person who relies on electricity for life-sustaining medical equipment.
>> When evacuating, be sure to take medical equipment, medicine and other supplies.
>> Place any portable generator in a well-ventilated area.
HECO said it is mobilizing field crews and equipment to staging areas to be most effective during an emergency.
