Fundraiser mixes food and movement
POSTED: Wednesday, October 07, 2009
IONA Contemporary Dance Theatre's latest fundraiser promises to be a dining experience for all the senses.
Called the “;Kama Sutra Supper Club,”; it is based on 1950s-style supper clubs, a marriage of food, dance and spirituality as envisioned by IONA's artistic director, Cheryl Flaharty.
The dinner takes place Sunday at Indigo Restaurant, with a silent auction at 6:30 p.m. and dinner with performance at 7:30. In collaboration with Indigo chef Glenn Chu, the event will feature five dancer and food installations that merge contemporary Indian cuisine with sensual, modern dance. Guests will interact with dancers costumed as deities, whether plucking a blueberry from the headdresses of the blueberry buddha, or resting flaming kebabs in Shiva's fire.
Included in the menu will be passed hors d'oeuvres of ginger-mint salmon and daikon-wrapped shrimp with chili-tangerine sauce, plus such courses as lamb samosas with mint chutney, oysters on the half shell with ginger mignonette, charred ahi brochettes with black mustard sauce, steamed fish masala, roasted eggplant and black peppercorn cake.
Themed sponsor tables of 10 start at $3,000, and individual tickets are $200.
The dance company, founded in 1990 by Flaharty, is supported by this annual fundraising event.
Next year is Iona's 20th anniversary, and Flaharty said, “;We are confident that if we come together to meet this year's fundraising goal, IONA will continue to dance and inspire our community for another 20 years.”;
