Endless interpretations

Destiny, Death, Dream, Destruction, Desire, Despair and Delirium. These are the names of the seven “;endless”; anthropomorphic personifications that control you and me and everyone else in this universe — or do we control them? These names aren't even really their names; in actuality they're just functions.
In the comic book world, however, these human traits became characters when author Neil Gaiman created the extremely popular DC Vertigo series “;The Sandman,”; in which the seven characters collectively were referred to as the Endless. Having a long, 75-issue run from 1989 to 1996, “;The Sandman”; was critically acclaimed and even hit the New York Times Bestseller List. In fact, most comic fans believe the series made DC's Vertigo franchise what it is today.
In tribute to Gaiman's creations, artist and Star-Bulletin staffer Michelle Poppler has put together a fan art show titled “;Endless Portraits.”; The exhibit showcases the artists' own interpretations of Gaiman's seven characters in a multitude of mediums. Besides Poppler's collection, the show also features works by Lupita Poppler, Lorenzo Gomez Trinidad, Tracy Chan, Leo Azambuja, Kristen Napier and Celina Murk.
“;Endless Portraits”; is on display at the Mercury Bar, 1142 Fort Street Mall (at the corner of Bethel Street and Chaplain Lane) through Dec. 15. Hours are 5 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. Monday through Saturday. Call 537-3080.
A free opening party will be held at the bar 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Thursday, with DJ Nightfox, DJ Casey overseeing entertainment and fashion by Kisa Kosmos. Patrons are encouraged to dress as their favorite Sandman character and enter a costume contest — the winner will receive of the portraits from the show.
