ASHBURN, Va. — The Washington Redskins placed former University of Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan on injured reserve with a hamstring injury, ruling him out for the season.

The team reported on its Web site Saturday that Brennan aggravated a nagging hamstring problem during Thursday night's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Brennan and Chase Daniel spent the preseason battling for the third-string job.

“;He could be out for a while with his hamstring,”; Redskins head coach Jim Zorn said in a story at the Web site. “;He's a guy we need to get rehabbed. For us, it's an opportunity to not keep putting a Band-Aid on it.”;

An MRI revealed a hamstring tear. The team also cited a hip injury, which would be Brennan's second in two years. He missed much of the offseason work in 2008 because of hip surgery.

Meanwhile, Daniel announced via Twitter that he was one of the final roster cuts and might get a place on the practice squad.

The moves would leave the Redskins with two quarterbacks — starter Jason Campbell and veteran Todd Collins — although the team could find a No. 3 among the many players who were cut today as NFL teams slashed their rosters to 53 for the regular season.

The news brought a surprise ending to the contest between two players who finished third and fourth in the Heisman balloting two years ago.

Daniel, a undrafted rookie from Missouri generously listed at 6 feet, was considered a long shot to overtake Brennan at the start of training camp. But Brennan threw three interceptions in preseason while Daniel had three touchdowns and no interceptions in more limited action.

Brennan, a sixth-round draft pick last year, developed a rabid fan base after strong performances in the 2008 preseason. He was the No. 3 quarterback throughout the regular season and did not play.

Although Brennan had thrown an interception in each of the first three exhibition games, he had his best game in the final exhibition against Jacksonville, completing 10 of 14 passes for 83 yards without an interception.

Ironically, it was Brennan's injury during the fourth period that ushered Daniel back into the game and, more than likely, allowed him to make the practice squad.

Daniel had a difficult performance till then, completing just three of nine passes for 16 yards and a fumble. But he would finish eight of 16 for 81 yards and a touchdown.
