A marine salvage company early this morning freed the 72-foot sailboat, which ran aground Monday 100 yards off the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel.

The boat was towed to Keehi harbor and an initial inspection revealed a 30-foot hole on the port side of the wooden hull.

State officials said Cates International marine salvage company freed the sailboat Momentum, owned by Leif Hart, after 3 a.m. during high tide.

An assessment will be made today to determine if the vessel, which is insured, can be repaired.

The Momentum ran aground at about 2:15 a.m. Monday after its bow severed the anchor line, according to state officials. The owner and two other people on board swam to shore.

The boat, stuck at the “;Pops”; surf break, was being fitted with float bags yesterday.

The Coast Guard said Monday that there was no immediate danger of pollutants being released.
