Man arrested after standoff

Police arrested a 33-year-old man who held a gun to his head during a nearly 10-hour standoff at his ex-girlfriend's Kapolei home.

Officers were called after the man forced his way into the home on Kaiau Avenue in Pae Ko Gardens at about 12:20 a.m.

The SWAT team surrounded the house after the man held a gun to his head and refused to give it up, police said.

Negotiators arrived and the man allowed his 30-year-old girlfriend to leave the house.

Police said the man stood outside the townhouse with a pistol in one hand and a photo of his ex-girlfriend in his other hand until 9:55 a.m., when he surrendered to police.

No one was injured in the incident, police said. Neighboring homes were evacuated during the standoff.

The Red Cross assisted about 30 residents who had to sleep at a recreation center at the townhouse complex and provided breakfast for them and emergency responders.

One hurt, one arrested in fight between buddies

An argument between two drinking buddies sent one man to the hospital and the other to jail Wednesday.

Police said a 44-year-old Wahiawa man and a 27-year-old man were drinking in Wahiawa Wednesday evening when the older man got upset over “;obscene sounds”; that the younger man was making in front of the 44-year-old man's teenage daughters.

The older man allegedly struck the 27-year-old in the face with a beer bottle and left him bleeding.

The victim went to the hospital on his own and police were called. They arrested the 44-year-old man a short time later at the Wahiawa police station.

Officer slightly injured trying to stop argument

A 44-year-old woman allegedly assaulted a police officer who tried to break up an argument between the woman and her sister at about 11:15 p.m. Friday, Honolulu police said.

When an officer stepped between the two women at a Kalihi residence, the woman lunged at him and grabbed his bulletproof vest to pull him out of the way, scratching the officer's neck, police said.

Officer had arrest role in census case

HILO » The Hawaii County Police Department has confirmed it was a police officer who had a census worker arrested for trespassing.

But Maj. Sam Thomas has declined to name the officer, saying he can't discuss the case because it is ongoing.

Census worker Russell Haas has pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor trespassing. A pretrial hearing is set for June 17.

Haas has the support of federal prosecutors, who want the case moved to U.S. District Court.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Larry Butrick says Haas is a federal employee and the March 10 incident occurred while he was performing his duties. Butrick says he would act as Haas' defense attorney.

County Deputy Prosecutor Christopher Bridges says he'll try to keep the case in state court.
