Children to get free meals at 68 schools this summer

The Department of Education is providing free breakfast and lunch at 68 public schools this summer to all children 18 and younger.

The meals are offered at schools that will be holding summer programs, but children do not need to be enrolled in the programs to receive the meals.

The program is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It applies to schools where half or more of their regular students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Service is generally offered Monday through Thursday, as well as July 2 and 9, which are Fridays. To find out which schools are participating and the days the meals will be served, visit hawaiidoe.org.

Moi fishing prohibition extends through August

The fishing season for moi is closed for the “;critical summer spawning period,”; the state Department of Land and Natural Resources reminded fishermen.

“;We ask for the public's help in complying with the closed season,”; said Laura H. Thielen, DNLR chairwoman. “;If we are to have fish for the future, we need to share the responsibility and take care of our ocean.”;

The prohibition on fishing remains in effect until Aug. 31.

Seasons for the spiny lobster (ula), slipper lobster (ula papapa), and Kona crab also are closed through the end of August.

Arizona group's new name reflects its Pacific focus

The Arizona Memorial Museum Association has changed its name to Pacific Historic Parks.

The name better reflects that the organization also helps fund educational materials for the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument at Pearl Harbor, Kalaupapa National Historic Park on Molokai, American Memorial Park on Saipan, and War in the Pacific National Historical Park on Guam, said board chairman George Sullivan.

The group helps the National Park Service provide audio tours, teacher workshops, Junior Ranger programs, foreign language brochures and the Witness to History video conference program.

“;Although our name has changed, our mission remains the same,”; said Sullivan.
