Jobe moves on in tennis
Honolulu's Ikaika Jobe defeated Eric Hechtman 6-3, 6-4 yesterday in the semifinals of the U.S. Open National Playoffs Hawaii Pacific Sectional Qualifying Tournament, held at the Patsy T. Mink Central Oahu Regional Park Tennis Complex.
The Punahou graduate will play Erik Nelson-Kortland of California in today's 9 a.m. final. Nelson-Kortland, who ousted Olympic gold medal skier Bode Miller in Thursday's opening round, downed Lahainaluna product Alec Wagner 6-2, 6-2 yesterday.
The women's final will follow the men's and pits Californians Amy Alcini and Maureen Diaz. Alcini topped Sacred Hearts' Kelley Domingo 6-2, 6-3 in yesterday's semifinal, while Diaz advanced with a 6-3, 6-2 win over California's Hailee Gopinath.
Cal Lee, Tune at QB Club
Hawaii assistant football coach Cal Lee and Rick Tune, coach of the state champion Punahou boys volleyball team, headline the speakers program at tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon.
Also speaking is Steve Colflesh, the athletic director at Seabury Hall, and Molokai High's three-sport standout Danna-Lynn Hooper-Juario, one of the 12 student-athletes chosen for this year's Hawaii High School Hall of Honor.
Lunch at the Maple Garden begins at 11:30 a.m. and costs $15 per person. The program follows at noon.
Zimet fifth on AVP stop
Former Hawaii volleyball player Eyal Zimet and partner Matt Prosser finished tied for fifth at the AVP Huntington Beach (Calif.) Open yesterday.
It was Zimet's second-highest finish on the pro tour in eight seasons.
Still in contention for the title are former UH player Sean Scott and former UCLA player Kevin Wong. Scott, seeded second with John Hyden, and Wong, seeded eighth with Casey Petterson, are among the four teams vying for the championship today.
Openings at HBA camp
Hawaii Baptist Academy's annual summer basketball camp has limited spaces available for players entering grades eight through 12 at this week's session.
The camp runs from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. The staff includes former Hawaii-Hilo coach Jimmy Yagi and St. Joseph High coach Harry Scanlan-Lette.
