Roster of familiar names joining Star-Advertiser
POSTED: Thursday, June 03, 2010
The new Honolulu Star-Advertiser will welcome more than two dozen soon-to-be-former Honolulu Advertiser employees come Monday, the day the new broadsheet format debuts.
Former Advertiser Managing Editor Marsha McFadden has been appointed city editor, and Star-Bulletin alumnus Dan Woods, a former Advertiser deputy local news editor, will be an assistant city editor.
Former Advertiser reporters whose bylines will continue to appear above news you need to know include William Cole, Derrick DePledge, Dan Nakaso and Michael Tsai, as well as Rob Perez and Mary Vorsino, who are also Star-Bulletin alumni.
The business news section will be led by Editor David Butts, former Advertiser local news editor, while Andrew Gomes, Sean Hao and Alan Yonan will join the Star-Advertiser as business reporters.
Former Advertiser sports editor Curtis Murayama joins the team as deputy sports editor, with reporters Ann Miller and Stephen Tsai beefing up our sports reporting lineup.
Christie Wilson, a former deputy local news editor at the Advertiser, already has started guiding the Features section as its editor and, alongside the rest of us, will welcome former Advertiser Features Editor Elizabeth Kieszkowski as editor of the well-branded TGIF section. Mike Gordon will helm Star-Advertiser reporting on the film and television industry.
It is your columnist's completely biased opinion that the photographers whose work has graced these pages all these years are among the best shooters to be found anywhere—and former Advertiser photographer Bruce Asato will join their ranks.
The creativity of artist Martha Hernandez and page designers Joe Guinto and Matt Schick will add to the look of the new paper, and the fine-toothed-combing skills of John Bender will add to the brain trust of the Star-Advertiser universal desk, where news copy is edited.
Adding to the perspectives and voices in our editorial pages will be Stephen Downes, former Advertiser deputy editorial page editor, as deputy editor, and former editorial writer Vicki Viotti.
Worried about your must-reads?
Former Star-Bulletin Managing Editor Dave Shapiro will continue to write a column twice a week, alternating with thrice-weekly Lee Cataluna; Ferd Lewis' sports columns will live on; entertainment columnist Wayne Harada will appear weekly; and, just like a favorite, comforting dish, Star-Advertiser food sections will include regular contributions from Wanda Adams, longtime Advertiser food editor.
“;We feel fortunate to welcome these high-quality journalists—more than many people believed we would bring down,”; said Frank Bridgewater, editor of the Star-Bulletin. “;On the other hand, a lot of very good journalists are no longer employed, and that is unfortunate.”;
At the same time the former Advertiser journalists are arriving, the Star-Bulletin has been happily welcoming the return of eight newsroom co-workers, laid off a year ago due to the economy. Together, we move into a future of continued service to you, the reader we serve.
