Hawaii junior third baseman Melissa Gonzalez became the third member of an elite group in Rainbow Wahine softball history.
Gonzalez was named a first-team Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American yesterday, joining Brooke Wilkins and Stacey Porter with that distinction.
“;It means a lot,”; Gonzalez said. “;It was something I hoped for growing up and to find out was a surreal moment.”;
Gonzalez enters the Women's College World Series hitting a team-best .408 with 25 homers.
Freshman Kelly Majam, who leads the nation with 30 home runs, was named to the All-America second team.
Gonzalez credited the team's success in its run to the program's first WCWS appearance for her individual honors.
“;Everything is contagious and I don't think I'd be doing as well if we weren't doing so well as a team,”; Gonzalez said.
Wilkins was an All-American pitcher in 1995 and Porter, a first baseman, made the team in 2003.
