Kiawe logs fuel fire in Maili
A Maili wildfire burned about 1.5 acres of brush along Lualualei Homestead Road yesterday and destroyed an abandoned wooden house in the rural valley.
The fire, which was brought under control in two hours, did not pose a threat to any occupied structures, said Honolulu fire Capt. Terry Seelig.
Firefighters with four engine companies and three tankers fought the blaze, which was fueled by heavy kiawe logs among the overgrown brush, Seelig said.
Firefighters arrived at the scene at 2:45 p.m. and had the fire under control by 4:35 p.m.
Male driver arrested in assault
A 26-year-old Makiki man hit a woman with a baton and ran over another woman's ankle Sunday with his car after a group of women confronted him about speeding in a parking lot on Kapiolani Boulevard, police said.
After the women complained, the man got out of his car and hit a 22-year-old woman on the head near Kona Iki Street at about 4 a.m., police said. The man sped off but returned and got out of his car in the middle of the road, police said.
Another 22-year-old woman approached him, but she slipped and fell beside the car, and the man ran the car over her ankle while driving off, police said.
Officers arrested the man nearby on suspicion of assault, terroristic threatening and drunken driving.
The woman who was run over was taken to the Queen's Medical Center, where she was treated and released.
