A team of students from Waianae High School took “;Best of Show”; honors at the 2010 HMSA Teen Video Awards. The annual statewide competition encourages teens to create compelling video messages about the dangers of substance abuse and the importance of living a healthy life. The Waianae video, titled “;Meth Will Kill You,”; was produced by Brook Acuna, Josh Alcantra, Betty Esene, Cody Kau and Jordan Wu; their teacher is John Allen III.
Henry Cheng, a 2009 graduate of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, is one of 18 winners of the national Luce Scholars Program scholarship.
Cheng studied biological engineering and is a former UH Regents Scholar. He will spend a yearlong internship at Chunlalongkorn University in Thailand to work on pandemic influenza preparedness projects.
An anonymous donor's $60,000 gift helped to establish a fund called A Starlit Walk into Eternity at the University of Hawaii at Manoa's Institute for Astronomy. The endowed fund will be used to support students, programs, research and community outreach.
