Suspect is held in woman's beating

Honolulu police say a 26-year-old Kalihi man beat a homeless woman over a pack of cigarettes, knocking out one of her teeth.

At 6:55 a.m. Wednesday the woman, 34, who has a prosthetic leg, was asleep when the suspect allegedly attacked her.

Police said the suspect kicked and punched the victim several times, then took the victim's bag. When the woman tried to resist, the suspect allegedly used one of the woman's crutches to strike her several times, causing a tooth to fall out.

The suspect fled with a pack of cigarettes from the victim's bag. Paramedics transported the victim to the Queen's Medical Center in stable condition.

A witness directed officers to the suspect's location. About an hour later, officers located the suspect at Coral and Ilalo streets in Kakaako and arrested him on suspicion on first-degree robbery.
