The Kaohe Game Management Area and portions of the Mauna Kea Forest Reserve on the Big Island will be closed to the public from June 4 to Aug. 31 due to a high risk of fire.

Forestry officials reported that rainfall in the area from January to April amounted to only a fifth of its normal level. The western slopes of Mauna Kea have received minimal rainfall during the past year.

Forecasters recently said the state's wet season from October to April was the driest in 30 years.

The public will still be able to access the Mauna Kea State Recreation Area.
