Raw power
POSTED: Friday, May 28, 2010
Next month, Jack Johnson will embark on another world tour, this time in support of his latest album, “;To the Sea,”; which will be released on Tuesday.
Coming off another successful Kokua Festival here, Johnson spoke last month about the album much influenced by both being a father to three children, as well as the memory of his late dad.
“;There are certain bands that I like—Radiohead, Steely Dan—who are known to experiment a lot while in the studio, and their music is conducive to that approach. Other bands, like the one Taj (Mahal) leads, are a little more spontaneous, and that's more to my liking.
“;I would rather keep as close to the raw versions of songs as possible and not to be overly produced,”; Johnson said. “;Being in the studio, it's easy to overthink things, so that's why I like working under time constraints. So my band and I was here for three weeks recording, and even if there was the occasional little mistake or flub, I'd sit on it instead of trying to correct it immediately. I've been listening to Rolling Stones recordings lately and enjoy catching the so-called imperfections.”;

Johnson, along with his longtime buddies keyboardist-backup singer Zach Gill, bassist Merlo Podlewski and drummer Adam Topol, recorded all of “;To the Sea”; at Johnson's Mango Tree Studios on the North Shore with co-producer Robert Carranza; overdubs were done later at his solar-powered Los Angeles studio. Featured guests include G. Love on harmonica and Hawaii's own Paula Fuga on vocals.
The jaunty and good-spirited “;You and Your Heart”; has been the advance single off the album, and Johnson said the rest of the songs “;have a little bit of everything.”;
“;Before Kim and I had kids, I had a lot more time for the music, so I didn't write down things much,”; he continued. “;Now if I have a quick idea, it might be long time before I work on it. These days, it's picking the boys up from school, diapering, although it's easier to be inspired. It's because of them I'm able to watch things through new eyes.

“;I get bits and pieces—a little melody or a horn line, humming it with no content in mind. My brother and I play lot of a music together. Throughout the week, syllables and words will come to me, and once I get one line formed, the question 'Why?' always pops into my head. Writing lyrics is like doing a puzzle for me.”;
One of those “;puzzles”; that's a favorite of his on the album is “;My Little Girl,”; a quiet and intimate ode to his youngest. There's also a song with a strong island vibe called “;Turn Your Love,”; featuring a guest vocal by Fuga, who Johnson said is recording a new project in L.A.
Other album standouts include “;At or With Me,”; the sweet and understated love song “;From the Clouds”; and the groove-based “;Pictures of People Taking Pictures.”;
But it's the final song on the album that is arguably the best thing Johnson has written to date. The languid “;Only the Ocean”; has a particularly affecting vocal, no surprise considering the song's inspiration: “;It's for my dad, who passed away last summer. Every time I visit the ocean, it's like I'm visiting him, too. It's where I feel his energy the most.”;
