Memorial Day rites make weekend solemn

Memorial Day will be observed in Honolulu with formal ceremonies beginning Sunday and culminating Monday with services at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl and the Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery in Kaneohe.

Events at Punchbowl begin at 8:30 a.m. Sunday with a service conducted by the Daijingu Temple in the Memorial Chapel.

At 10 a.m. the Pacific American Foundation will conduct its annual memorial service at the bottom of the Honolulu Memorial.

Beginning at 1 p.m. the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts will place small American flags and leis on more than 38,000 grave sites at the cemetery.

About 1,000 Vietnam veterans and their families will be in attendance for their annual Vietnam Veterans Candlelight Ceremony at 5:30 p.m.

Marine Brig. Gen. Jerome Hagen will be this year's keynote speaker.

At 8:30 a.m. Monday, U.S. Sens. Daniel Inouye and Daniel Akaka, Lt. Gov. James “;Duke”; Aiona and Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann will attend the annual Mayor's Memorial Day Ceremony at Punchbowl.

The Hickam Air Force Honor Guard will perform a three-gun rifle volley to taps, and jets from the Hawaii Air National Guard's 199th Fighter Squadron will fly overhead in a “;missing man”; formation.

               

     

 

 

POLICE TO DIRECT PUNCHBOWL TRAFFIC

        Police officers will help direct traffic around the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific during the Memorial Day weekend.

       

Officers will be stationed at the intersections of Tantalus and Puowaina drives, Puowaina Drive and Hookui Street, and Hookui and Auwaiolimu streets.

       

Left turns from Hookui Street to Auwaiolimu Street will not be allowed during the three-day weekend.

       

The two-way road system within the cemetery will be one-way going counterclockwise through Monday.

Gov. Linda Lingle and Maj. Gen. Robert Lee, state adjutant general, will preside over ceremonies at 1:15 p.m. Monday at the Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery.

The program will open with music by the 111th Army Band from the Hawaii Army Guard, followed by a chant from kumu Leimomi Kiyono. The Na Leo Lani Choir will sing the national and state anthems.

Mark Moses, director of the Office of Veterans Services, will serve as emcee of the ceremony.

Air Guardsmen will provide a rifle salute.

Shuttle service set for ceremony

The city will provide shuttle bus service for those attending the Mayor's Memorial Day Ceremony at 8:30 a.m. Monday at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl.

Parking at the cemetery is limited, and those attending are encouraged to use the bus, a release said.

Free parking will be available at the Fasi Civic Center lot for motorists who wish to board the bus at the Alapai Transit Center from 7 to 8 a.m. Signs on the buses will read 15 Punchbowl and 15 Alapai Transit Center (return bus).

Bus route 15 (Makiki/ Pacific Heights) will continue to service passengers.

Regular fares of $2.25 for adults and $1 for youths (grades 1- 12) will remain. Monthly adult and youth passes will be accepted, and elderly and disabled cards will be honored.
