Punahou boys basketball coach Alika Smith might not return to the program next season, a school official said.

Assistant athletic director Kale Ane confirmed yesterday that Smith is considering different avenues.

“;We do an evaluation with all coaches after their seasons and we're just talking about his thoughts about the future,”; Ane said last night. “;It's confidential and we're in no rush to make a rash decision. It's a decision he and his family will talk about.”;

Smith, a former University of Hawaii and Kalaheo guard, guided the Buffanblu to a 24-4 record and a No. 3 ranking in the final Star-Bulletin Boys Basketball Top 10.

Before coming to Punahou, he was a coach at Academy of the Pacific and an assistant at UH.

Dan Hale, Smith's predecessor, is still living with his family in Virginia. Hale's plan to return to the islands this year may be on hold. He is now coaching a high school team there and his son is playing as well.

Hale left Punahou after the 2008-09 season to move his family to Virginia, where his father was nearing retirement.
