1 killed, 1 hurt after truck overturns
A man in his 30s died last night after the pickup truck he was driving overturned on the H-1 freeway near the North-South Road onramp.
Emergency Medical Services personnel transported the man in critical condition to a nearby hospital, where he died, Emergency Services Department spokesman Bryan Cheplic said.
Cheplic said a female passenger in her mid-30s was taken in serious condition to a trauma center. Fire Capt. Earle Kealoha Jr. said the woman was pregnant.
The 6:04 p.m. incident prompted police to shut down all Honolulu-bound lanes on the H-1 freeway just after the North-South Road onramp. Kealoha said firefighters arriving at the scene found a Toyota pickup truck lying on its side and engulfed in flames.
Man shot by FBI agent is charged
A 27-year-old man who was shot by an off-duty FBI agent on Tantalus was charged yesterday with two counts of first-degree terroristic threatening.
Martin S. Boegel of Makiki is being held in lieu of $250,000 bail.
At 1:05 p.m. May 9, police responded to a report of a man standing on Tantalus Drive, pointing a gun to his head and at other people in the area.
According to a police affidavit filed in Honolulu District Court, a man and his wife were traveling up Tantalus Drive in a rental car, following a white pickup truck driven by Boegel.
Boegel stopped, reversed, turned around, then got out of the truck and brandished a gun, the affidavit said. Initially, Boegel pointed it under his chin, then allegedly aimed it at the couple.
Blocked by Boegel's pickup, the man reversed his car down Tantalus Drive and informed other drivers, who were also blocked. One of them was an off-duty FBI agent.
At that point, Boegel drove up in his truck, stopped and once again pointed a handgun at the couple, the affidavit says. The FBI agent drew his firearm, identified himself and told Boegel to drop his weapon. Boegel instead pointed the gun at the agent, who then shot him. Police recovered a replica Sig Sauer P226 air pistol.
