Stanford gives UH that sinking feeling

Kenny Diekroeger had three hits and drove in a run and Stanford held Hawaii to six hits in a 5-1 victory yesterday at Klein Field at the Sunken Diamond in Stanford, Calif.
Kevin Fujii hit his first career home run for the Rainbows (26-24), who went with a much different lineup than normal to give some guys extra rest before their final Western Athletic Conference series of the season begins Friday at San Jose State.
Derek Brown, who had only played in two games all season, got the start at first base and Jesse Moore started in left field.
“;(Jeff) Van Doornum had a cortisone shot (Monday) in his shoulder and couldn't throw and (Kevin) Macdonald's ankle has really been bothering him, so I thought it was best to give those guys a day off,”; Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso said. “;It's tough to go out there against Stanford without a few of your best hitters, but we're obviously focused on getting these guys ready to go for (San Jose).”;
Junior Josh Slaats got in two innings of work to try to cure what has been ailing him in conference play.
He allowed one hit and faced the minimum six batters.
“;He was not very good his first inning,”; Trapasso said. “;Struggled with his command again and that's why I sent him back out there in the second.
“;He made some adjustments and was much better. He got back to throwing downhill and pitching low in the zone.”;
Hawaii used five different pitchers in the game, including senior Harrison Kuroda, who was saddled with the loss after allowing three runs in 1 1/3 innings.
Colin Walsh led off the sixth inning with a double off of Kuroda and scored on a one-out single by Diekroeger. Eric Smith followed with a double down the right-field line, ending Kuroda's day.
Moore, who started in left, came on to pitch and allowed both runners on base to score. A balk forced in one run and Jake Schlander singled up the middle to give Stanford a 4-1 lead.
The Cardinal tacked on a run in the seventh on an RBI single by Walsh.
Kolten Wong and Fujii finished with two hits apiece and Greg Garcia singled up the middle in the ninth to extend his hitting streak to six games.
Alex Capaul allowed an unearned run in two innings and Lenny Linsky retired all four batters he faced.
The Rainbows will head to San Jose for a pivotal series against the Spartans. Hawaii needs two wins to assure itself a berth in the WAC tournament beginning a week from today in Mesa, Ariz.
The Rainbows can also get in if Sacramento State loses two games at Fresno State.
Trapasso said he hadn't decided whether Slaats or Sam Spangler would start Friday's opener.
