Mililani's No. 1 sports dad lost his battle with cancer
POSTED: Sunday, May 16, 2010
QUESTION: What ever happened to Chad Senas, the father of Mililani High School's four softball standouts, who was being treated for cancer?
ANSWER: Senas, 43, died in February after making three trips to the City of Hope Cancer Institute in Los Angeles as his last hope for survival, his wife Janette Senas said.
The school sponsored a fundraiser last May that enabled him to get the clinical trial treatments, but the cancer spread and he had to have his right arm amputated. His right leg and part of his torso were removed four years ago.
His goal was to stay alive until his daughter Courtney Senas, an all-star shortstop on the Trojans softball team, graduated in ceremonies today, she said.
Her team, the top seed in this week's state softball championship, dedicated the last and current seasons to Senas, who was a fixture at every game. The Senases are parents of four female softball stars over the past eight years at Mililani, including Ciera, Chastity and Chanelle. Her father died knowing that Courtney received a full scholarship to Florida State University in the fall, Janette Senas said.
After his death, “;there was no joy, no feeling for Courtney to play. She missed her dad, her No. 1 fan. He always pushed her to be the best she could be. So she used that to push herself to make her dad proud. ... She knows Dad's watching, like (the movie) 'Angels in the Outfield.' So she's giving everything that she's got,”; Janette Senas said.
The Mililani softball team came in third in the Data House/HHSAA Division I State Softball Championships on Friday.
