Musical benefit on tap for SPCA

Lovers of animals and music can satisfy both passions at a fundraiser for the Oahu SPCA—Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals—presented by Al Waterson and You, the folks who are behind the weekly karaoke nights at Don Ho's Island Grill.

The benefit is set from 6 to 9 p.m. May 23 at Don Ho's at Aloha Tower. The event will be hosted by Al Waterson. Among the entertainers will be Jordan Segundo, Yasmin Dar, Anita Hall, Keahi Conjugacion, Denby Dung and others.

Dogs and cats that need homes will be available at this event.

The Oahu SPCA is a nonprofit no-kill shelter that offers care and medical treatment for rescued and abandoned animals. One hundred percent of the donations made will go to the Oahu SPCA.

 

Museums hui will visit Pearl sites

The Hawaii Museums Association will tour Pearl Harbor as part of its 2010 Conference and Annual Meeting from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.

Highlights include tours of the USS Arizona Memorial as well as the Ford Island Conference Center, Battleship Missouri Memorial and Pacific Aviation Museum.

Park historian Daniel Martinez will conduct a behind-the-scenes tour of the USS Arizona's new $58 million construction project.

The USS Missouri, meanwhile, is allowing participants to spend the night on the battleship on Friday. An evening tour and early morning activities are included.

The conference is followed by a workshop at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Women: Channel your inner pirate

Producers for Disney's “;Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides”; are holding a casting call 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Kauai Community College student lounge.

Sande Alessi Casting is seeking two young women—one Caucasian and one Hispanic. Also sought are Spanish men, ages 18 to 50, with a slim-to-average builds.

The “;Pirates”; film will be shot on Kauai and Oahu this summer, wrapping up some time in August, and is slated for release in summer 2011.

 

Free session aids in SAT prepping

Build skills for taking standardized tests at the free “;SAT 101 Test Strategies Informational Seminar”; at Kailua Public Library.

The seminar, which runs 2 to 4 p.m. next Saturday, will be held under the Reading Tree. It is designed for prospective college applicants interested in boosting their SAT exam scores. Parents of students are invited to attend as well.

Besides an overview of the format and content of the SAT, Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions, which is offering the seminar, will discuss important test-taking and preparation strategies. They will also answer questions about the overall college admissions process.

Contest seeks young scientists

Hawaii's next top young scientist has the opportunity to win a trip to New York as well as $50,000 in U.S. Savings Bonds.

Middle school students have three weeks left to enter the 2010 Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge. Students must submit a short video on www.youngscientistchallenge.com that communicates the science behind a possible solution for different safety and security issues, including food safety and sun protection.

Ten students will be selected for an all-expenses-paid trip to New York to compete in the finals in October. Deadline for entries is May 27. Visit bit.ly/buOhjJ.
