Punahou boys, Radford girls make a run at state record

They meant everything, and they meant nothing.

Both the boys and girls state meet records in the 4x100 relay fell yesterday at the HHSAA state track championship trials at Kamehameha's Kunuiakea Stadium, to Punahou and Radford, respectively.

An impressive feat on both counts. Yet the Buffanblu boys and Rams girls know their marks mean nothing if they can't replicate their effort today when it counts alongside the other seven fastest teams in the state. For track events, performing on the final day is the only way to score team points.

Radford (Sade Myers, Tyler Whitener, Andrea Hinkle and Kaeli Patton) posted a time of 48.70, topping the 1999 Mililani record of 48.88. Punahou (Tim Kamana, Brian Suite, Kawika Pedrina and Michael Zane) completed the circuit in 42.38 seconds, topping Radford's 42.53 of two years ago.

“;We just let it go and come back tomorrow like it's a brand-new day,”; said Radford's Hinkle, who ran the third leg. “;We know it's not over yet, so we have to come out tomorrow and give it 110 percent.”;

Kamana of Punahou echoed those sentiments.

“;Tomorrow's going to decide who won the gold. Tomorrow counts more,”; he said. “;No doubt in my mind that we can do this again.”;

Patton also got her team off to a good start in the overall standings by winning the girls high jump at 5 feet, 2 inches by virtue of a tiebreaker.

It was one of two events completed yesterday. St. Anthony junior Ethan Kim claimed the boys pole vault with an emphatic performance. He vaulted a personal-best 14-3 — nearly attaining 14-6 — to become the second straight vaulter from his school to take that event after Billy Pacheco did it last year.

“;Pole vaulting is one of the top sports we have in the school,”; said Kim, who was previously coached by state record-holder (15-3) Bubba Maclean of St. Anthony. “;It's a real honor to have something like this at St. Anthony.”;

Punahou senior Ashley Satterwhite can defend her title in the girls 100-meter dash today, as can boys counterpart Jonathan Padron of Damien. The defending team champion Punahou girls and Radford should give each other a solid test for the overall title, while Saint Louis is essentially out of the running to defend its boys title.

One of the more exciting individual duels in several leaping events will be between Kahuku junior Zhane Santiago and Hawaii Prep Academy senior Kuuipo Nakoa. Santiago is the two-time defending state champion in the triple jump and 100-meter hurdles, while Nakoa claimed the long jump last year. Both were sharp yesterday.

Santiago or Kaimuki's Vaioleti Mikaele (discus) can become the 13th girls athlete since 1990 to win an event three consecutive years.

“;It's harder this year, because the past two years ... it's not like I didn't care, but I always had a year to come back and do it,”; Mikaele said. “;This year I can't. I have to give it my all.”;
