HPU baseball tops Chico

The Hawaii Pacific baseball team thumped Chico State 11-3 yesterday in the Division II West Region Tournament in Compton, Calif.

After falling to UC San Diego on Thursday, the Sea Warriors can't afford to lose another game or they will be ousted from the double-elimination tourney.

The HPU offense stepped up in the eighth with two home runs, scoring six runs.

Blake Amaral led HPU hitting 3-for-5 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBIs.

 

BYUH reaches tennis finals

Third-ranked Brigham Young-Hawaii gutted out a comeback 5-4 win over No. 4 Lynn (Fla.) yesterday to advance to the finals of the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis National Championships in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

Despite an 8-3 win by the Seasiders' No. 1 doubles team of Yuan Jian and Elwen Li, BYUH trailed 2-1 heading into singles play.

The Fighting Knights pushed their lead to 4-1, before Li started the Seasiders rally with a straight-set win at No. 2 singles. BYUH took two of the next three singles matches.

Finally, ITA player of the year Jenny Chin fought off leg cramps to outlast the Fighting Knights' Tessie Salame 6-4, 0-6, 6-3 to send the Seasiders (32-0) into today's finals against top-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State, the two-time defending champion.

» Hawaii Pacific's women's team was swept by Armstrong Atlantic 5-0 in the D-II semifinals.

The Lady Pirates captured three doubles and two singles matches from the Sea Warriors to improve to 32-0 for the season. HPU ended its campaign at 21-5.

 

Bonk finishes 20th in D-III

Pacific golfer and Kamuela native Max Bonk finished 20th at the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship in Hershey, Pa., yesterday.

Bonk shot a 2-over 74 in the final round, tying with four others for 20th place with a score of 294 and improving eight spots from 2008.
