HPU, BYUH in tennis semis

The ninth-ranked Hawaii Pacific women's tennis team upset No. 6 California University (Pa.) 5-2 yesterday in the quarterfinals of the NCAA II Women's Tennis National Championships in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

The Lady Sea Warriors won three of four completed singles and two out of three doubles matches. Zora Vlckova defeated CUP's Jutta Bornefeld 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 1 match, Ingrid Cseh won the third singles draw 7-6 (7-4), 6-2, and Aleksandra Stankovic won the No. 6 match 6-1, 6-1.

HPU secured a spot in the semifinals with the victory and will face top-ranked Armstrong today.

>>The third-ranked Brigham Young-Hawaii women's tennis team trumped No. 16 Northwood (Mich.) yesterday, earning its 31st consecutive win.

The Seasiders swept all three doubles matches and won the top two singles matches to advance to the semifinals for the 12th straight year.

BYUH's Yuan Jia and Elwen Li won their respective singles matches on the No. 1 and No. 2 courts and picked up a victory together on the doubles side. Four singles games were left unfinished.

Hawaii golfer remains in top 20

Pacific (Ore.) junior Max Bonk finished with an even-par 72 score in the third round of the NCAA Division III Golf Championships, putting him in a tie for 19th place.

Bonk sank five birdies yesterday, shaving five strokes off his Wednesday finish.

UH heptathlete finishes fourth

Freshman Samantha Balentine finished fourth in the heptathlon at the Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships yesterday in Ruston, La.

Balentine finished with her personal best of 4,725 points and was the only freshman in the top eight.
