Campbell trips MPI in 9 innings
POSTED: Thursday, May 13, 2010
Nicole Arata wasn't perfect, but she had a perfect moment last night.
The Campbell shortstop overcame a crucial fifth-inning error by swatting a bases-clearing double in the top of the ninth inning as unseeded Campbell ousted No. 2 seed Mid-Pacific 6-3 last night in the Division I quarterfinals of the Data House/HHSAA Softball State Championships.
A near-capacity crowd at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium saw Katie Manuma outlast Keiki Carlos in a battle of two All-State pitchers. Though the Sabers (16-1) entered the tourney unseeded, they are ranked No. 3 in the Star-Bulletin Softball Top 10.
Mid-Pacific (12-3), champion of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, is ranked No. 1 in the poll.
For most of the night, though, the Owls' normally potent hit machine was silenced by Manuma, a crafty senior. Just one of the three runs scored off Manuma was earned. She struck out four and walked three in eight innings.
Carlos, a sophomore, whiffed 10 Sabers and walked six. She allowed only three earned runs.
Arata's clutch hit in the top of the ninth was set up by two walks issued by Carlos, as well as a decision by the pitcher to throw to second base on a sacrifice bunt. That toss sailed into center field, giving Campbell a break.

With the bases loaded, Arata drilled a pitch to deep center field, reaching the fence, and Brianne Silva-Kapihe, Gerika Pantohan and courtesy runner Tiana Rosario cleared the bases. Arata finished with five RBIs.
Campbell will face another ILH powerhouse, Punahou, in today's semifinal round at 7 p.m.
Campbell had the first runner in scoring position, but was cut down at home plate on a throw by MPI first baseman Courtney Niino to complete a double play.
The classic pitchers' duel coiled with suspense before the Owls broke the ice in the fourth inning.
Mahina Docktor walked, moved to second after Kristin Yama's single, and scored on a wild pitch by Manuma to give MPI a 1-0 lead.
Campbell took the lead in the top of the fifth with two runs. Pantohan reached base on an error by Docktor at third, and after Sharae Esprecion singled and Manuma walked, Arata singled to right, scoring Pantohan and Esprecion for a 2-1 lead.
Mid-Pacific answered quickly with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Tasha Luis-Hirata walked with one out, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Carlos, and came home on a throwing error by Arata at shortstop. Another throwing error, by Pantohan at third, allowed Docktor to score from second for a 3-2 MPI lead.
Campbell clawed back in the top of the sixth to tie it at 3.
