BYUH basketball lands recruit

The Brigham Young-Hawaii men's basketball team signed 6-foot-9 Fernando De Favari from Brazil.

De Favari played his last two seasons at College of Eastern Utah after having prepped at Carioca High in Brazil.

De Favari was ranked as a top-five post player during his high school career as he led his team to the state semifinals.

According to coaches at Eastern Utah, he was known for diving on the floor for loose balls and had the ability to draw a charge.

“;He is a very physical player and we expect him to add toughness to our lineup,”; Seasiders head coach Ken Wagner said.

BYUH's Ma wins award

Brigham Young-Hawaii's Rong Ma received the NCAA Division II Arthur Ashe Award for the West Region presented by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

The award is given to the player who best displays sportsmanship and leadership throughout the season.

Ma, a junior from China, led BYUH to a 19-3 record during the regular season while playing No. 1 singles and a member of the No. 1 doubles team with Dillon Porter.

The 29th-ranked Seasiders play Concordia (N.Y.) in the opening round of the NCAA Division II championships today at 10 a.m. Hawaii time in Altamonte Springs.

» BYUH's Jenny Chin was named the NCAA Division II National Senior Player of the Year by the ITA yesterday.

Chin, from South Korea, went undefeated in singles (18-0, mostly playing the No. 5 position) and doubles (21-0 with partner Salina Aranda at the No. 3 slot) this season.

Chin and the rest of the Seasiders tennis team opens the NCAA Division II championships today at 4:30 a.m. Hawaii time against Clayton State (Ga.).
