Marine, 20, dies after accident
A 20-year-old Kaneohe Marine died Saturday from injuries he received a day earlier when the car in which he was riding rear-ended a Coca-Cola delivery truck just before the entrance of the H-3 tunnel.
The medical examiner identified the victim as Derek Box. He was a lance corporal assigned to the Headquarters Company, 3rd Marine Regiment, according to the Marines.
Box was a front-seat passenger in a 2002 Dodge sedan that was traveling east on the H-3 freeway when the vehicle hit the truck, driven by a 33-year-old man.
Both vehicles were in the right lane. Police said the sedan was driven by a 19-year-old man, also from Kaneohe, who apparently was distracted and ran into the truck.
Box was taken in critical condition to the Queen's Medical Center after the 4:45 a.m. accident Friday. He died the next afternoon at the hospital.
