2 stranded on sailing vessel rescued south of harbor

The Coast Guard rescued two people who were stranded on a sailing vessel about 10 miles south of Pearl Harbor.

The crew of the 110-foot cutter Galveston Island responded to a call from the 26-foot vessel Akua Kai at about 2 p.m. Friday.

After reaching the scene at about 3 p.m., the crew found the vessel's props were “;fouled with line,”; a Coast Guard release said.

The Galveston Island crew towed the boat and the two passengers to Barbers Point Harbor by 5:15 p.m.

 

Waianae man, 48, arrested after police officer shoved

A 48-year-old Waianae man was arrested after he allegedly harassed a police officer serving him with a temporary restraining order, police said.

The officer pulled up to the Kaneilio Street home in Waianae and heard a loud argument at 7:53 a.m. Saturday, police said. When the officer went to investigate, the man who lives at the house shoved the officer in the chest, police said.

The officer served the restraining order and arrested the man on suspicion of harassment of a police officer and resisting arrest.

 

Return to store results in robbery suspect's arrest

Police arrested a 52-year-old Iwilei man who allegedly robbed a Kalihi gas station-convenience store.

Police said the man walked in armed with a knife at 3:28 a.m. Friday and demanded all of the cash. But when another customer was about to enter the store, the man fled, police said.

The man returned later in the day. Police were called, and the man was arrested at 6:25 p.m. on suspicion of first-degree robbery as well as four contempt warrants.

The knife, however, was not recovered.

 

Treatment for broken arm reveals unreported injury

Police have opened a second-degree assault case in connection with a 2-year-old girl who was found to have a broken bone in Halawa.

The girl was treated for a broken right arm in an emergency room at about 7:45 a.m. Saturday. The child's injury was consistent with the caregiver's statement, but an X-ray showed the girl had an older fracture that was unreported, police said.

No one was arrested, pending investigation of multiple caregivers, police said.

Hunt goes on for escaped Maui inmate

Maui police continued to search yesterday for an inmate who escaped from custody while attending his brother's funeral.

Harry Kahaleauki, 38, is considered dangerous.

He walked away from the funeral at Ballard's Mortuary in Kahului at about 9:20 a.m. Saturday, still wearing an orange prison uniform and leg shackles.

Police emphasized that Kahaleauki should be approached only with “;extreme caution.”; His 43 convictions include terroristic threatening, assault, auto theft, felony gun offenses and felony drug offenses.

He is described as 6 feet 1 inch tall, about 200 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.
