Top seeds handed out

On the softball diamond, Mililani and Kalani were named the overall top seeds in this week's DataHouse Softball State Championships. Other Division I seeds are Mid-Pacific (ILH), Waiakea (BIIF) and Baldwin (MIL). All games are at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. In Division II, Waimea (KIF), Hana (MIL) and Konawaena (BIIF) were given seeds. Games tomorrow and Wednesday are at Central Oahu Regional Park, with championship bracket games at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium on Thursday and Friday.

Punahou is the top seed (D-I) in the New City Nissan Boys Volleyball State Championship. The remaining seeds are Roosevelt, KS-Hawaii and Baldwin. Matches are at Kaimuki and McKinley. Hawaii Baptist is the top seed in Division II. Moanalua, Seabury Hall and Pahoa are the remaining seeds in the tournament that starts Thursday.

 

HPU headed to West Region

Hawaii Pacific is headed to the NCAA West Region baseball tournament for the first time in school history.

The Sea Warriors (37-10) enter the field as the fourth seed in the tournament hosted by Cal State Dominguez in Compton, Calif., Thursday through Sunday.

“;The wait is over and we are finally in,”; HPU coach Garett Yukumoto said. “;I am excited now to look ahead and study up on the other three teams in the tournament. It's just a great feeling for the coaches and players, but we need to get ready now for the task at hand.”;

The Sea Warriors, who have won nine in a row, open against top-seeded UC San Diego at 2 p.m. on Thursday.

Cal State Dominguez Hills, the second-seeded team, takes on third-seeded Chico State in the other opening-round game.

The tournament winner advances to the NCAA Division II College World Series, May 22-29 in Cary, N.C.

» Hawaii-Hilo's Keoni Manago and Aaron Correa are the Pacific West Conference's baseball player and pitcher of the week.

Manago led the Vulcans to a 3-1 series victory over Academy of Art last week. He batted .429 in the four games, going 6-for-14 with five runs scored, two doubles and three home runs.

Correa pitched 6 1/3 innings in a 5-2 victory over Academy Art on Tuesday.

He struck out eight and allowed just seven hits.

 

Seki is medalist in qualifying

Honolulu's Jim Seki shot a 3-under 69 yesterday at Hoakalei Country Club to take medalist honors in the first of four U.S. Open local qualifiers.

Seki and Michael Fan, who was runner-up with a 76, move on to sectional qualifying, where at least one player will advance to the U.S. Open, June 17-20 at Pebble Beach Golf Links.
