An off-duty FBI agent shot a 28-year-old man on Tantalus Drive yesterday after the man allegedly pointed his gun at two bystanders.

Police said the federal agent was flagged down at about 1:05 p.m. by a man and a woman who said the man had stopped his vehicle and was walking around the roadway brandishing a gun.

As they were talking, the agent saw the vehicle stop in front of him and the man brandish a handgun as he got out.

The man pointed the gun at the man, 27, and the woman, 21, who were still in their vehicle, police said.

The agent, 31, drew his weapon and told the man to put down his weapon, but he continued walking toward the agent, pointing his gun until the agent shot him, police said.

Paramedics took the gunman to the Queen's Medical Center in critical condition.

Police said when officers initially responded, the man was dressed in what appeared to be a police jacket.

The agent who shot the man was on personal time and was not injured. The FBI will conduct an internal investigation about what led up to the gunfire, said FBI spokesman Tom Simon.

Simon said further information might be released after the investigation, which could take several days.

He said the agent has an “;outstanding reputation”; and will not be suspended or placed on administrative leave.

Last week the man who was shot had been arrested for impersonating a police officer, a University of Hawaii-Manoa spokesman said.

In that incident the man drove up in a Ford pickup truck to the Maile Way entrance gate, wearing a jacket with the word “;police”; on it and some kind of badge, said UH spokesman Gregg Takayama.

The man asked for the restroom, and when the attendant asked whether he was a police officer, he said he was, Takayama said.

The attendant took down the man's license number, and he was arrested several days later, Takayama said.

Police closed Tantalus Drive for about four hours during the investigation.
