Lei sought for graves on Memorial Day

Fifty thousand fresh lei are needed to place on the graves of veterans for Memorial Day, May 31.

Boy Scouts will place a lei on each grave to honor the memory of the veterans and service members at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl and at all state veterans' cemeteries.

The 61st annual Mayor's Memorial Day Ceremony will be held at 8:30 a.m. May 31 at the Punchbowl cemetery.

The city is asking the public to donate lei made with fresh flowers or ti leaves, 20 to 24 inches long before tying. All lei must be tied. Floral sprays such as ti leaf and anthurium bouquets are also welcome.

Lei may be dropped off at these Oahu locations on May 28:

» City parks between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.—Ala Wai Community Park, Hauula Community Park, Kailua District Park, Kaneohe District Park, Makiki District Park, Makua Alii Senior Center Waialua District Park, Waianae District Park, Waiau District Park, Waimanalo District Park, Waipahu District Park.

» Any fire station between 6:30 a.m. and noon.

» Department of Parks & Recreation offices between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.—Fasi Municipal Building, Parks Permit Section, first floor, 650 S. King St.; Kapolei Hale security desk, first floor, 1000 Uluohia St.

Loose plumeria may also be dropped off May 28 at Waipahu District Park, Kailua District Park and Makua Alii Senior Center at 1542 Kalakaua Ave. For more information, call 768-3001.
