Sparks start Makakilo fire that displaces 4 families

Sparks from soldering a plumbing pipe in a bathroom caused a fire that displaced four families in a townhouse complex at Cambridge Park in Makakilo on Thursday, Honolulu fire investigators said.

The solder work in an upstairs unit sparked a smoldering fire in the bathroom wall's insulation that went undetected until it grew and produced enough smoke to activate smoke alarms in both upstairs units, investigators said.

Damage to portions of the two-story, four-unit building was estimated at $250,000.
