Advancing to the semifinals is nothing new for the Kahuku girls water polo team.

Getting past a team from the Interscholastic League of Honolulu would be a first.

The second-seeded Red Raiders defeated Mililani 14-5 yesterday in the quarterfinals of the Local Motion/HHSAA Girls Water Polo State Championships at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center at Central Oahu Regional Park.

Kahuku (13-1) has played in the semifinals in all seven years a state tournament in girls water polo has been held.

However, an ILH team has ended the Red Raiders' run in the state tournament six straight years.

Kahuku will try to snap that skid in an all-Raiders semifinal against unseeded 'Iolani, which defeated third-seeded Kamehameha-Hawaii 15-10 yesterday.

“;We can't afford to let down for a second,”; Kahuku coach Makana Whitford said. “;It'll be a tough game and if our girls are ready mentally, then I know physically their skills and techniques will come out.”;

The Red Raiders are the only OIA team to reach the state tournament final, but lost to Punahou, Kamehameha and 'Iolani in successive years from 2005-2007.

This year's squad only has three seniors, but is balanced on offense as evidenced by the eight different goal scorers in yesterday's game.

Junior Tahnei Roy and senior Marissa Del Ray led the way with three goals and Keola Kahaulelio scored twice.

“;In this game a lot of us were scoring and I thought it was good the way we all worked together,”; Roy said.

Senior 2-meter Kanani Mazzone scored three of the Trojans' five goals. Her goal early in the second quarter cut the Kahuku lead to 3-2, but the Red Raiders answered with a 4-0 run to go ahead by five at halftime.

Mazzone's third goal made it 8-5 late in the third quarter, but Kahuku scored six unanswered goals to end the game and drop Mililani to 8-7 overall.

“;We just fell apart,”; Mililani coach Aaron Waldrip said. “;(Kahuku) had the mental edge because skill-for-skill we have as much skill as they do. We just decided not to show up today.”;

'IOLANI 15, NO. 3 KS-HAWAII 10

Skye Kusao scored four goals and Nicolette Silva and Kelsey Ohira scored three apiece to lead the Raiders (6-4) past the previously undefeated Warriors (12-1).

Kiana Krzyska scored three of her four goals in the fourth quarter to lead Kamehameha-Hawaii.

NO. 1 PUNAHOU 15, LEILEHUA 1

Senior Shayna Price scored five goals to lead the undefeated Buffanblu (9-0) over the Mules (11-4).

Maxine Cowper scored in the third quarter for Leilehua's only score. Brailey Hirose-Hulbert scored three times for Punahou, which faces No. 4 Lahainaluna in tonight's second semifinal at 7.

NO. 4 LAHAINALUNA 6, ROOSEVELT 5

Koral Gill was the only Luna with multiple goals, scoring two in the third quarter to help beat the Rough Riders (13-2).

Jessye Acker scored Lahainaluna's only fourth-quarter goal and the Lunas (11-0) held Roosevelt scoreless for the final 3 minutes to remain undefeated.
