Shoji national player of year
Stanford men's volleyball senior setter Kawika Shoji was named the AVCA National Player of the Year on Wednesday.
The three-time All-American and 'Iolani graduate helped the top-ranked Cardinal reach tomorrow's NCAA championship with 44 assists in a three-set victory over No. 10 Ohio State yesterday.
He came into the match averaging 13.78 assists per set.
“;It's a great, great honor,”; Shoji said in a Stanford release. “;I am very proud. I have to thank my coaches and especially my teammates. ... Without our team, this award would not have happened.”;

BYUH, HPU teams advance in NCAAs
The Brigham Young-Hawaii women's tennis team knocked off No. 19 Cal State-Stanislaus 5-0 yesterday to claim the part of the NCAA II West regional, co-hosted by BYUH and Hawaii Pacific.
No. 3 BYUH won its 29th straight match and advanced to the 16-team national championships in Altamonte Springs, Fla. , where the Seasiders will face an opponent from the Southeast region on Wednesday.
» The HPU women's team also advanced to nationals with a 5-1 win over UC San Diego yesterday at Central Oahu Regional Park.
The Lady Sea Warriors (19-5) dropped only the No. 2 singles match. Their opponent is to be announced.
» The No. 29 BYUH men's tennis team defeated No. 30 UC San Diego 5-1 yesterday in Laie to take an NCAA II West regional championship berth to nationals.
The Seasiders (19-3) took two of three doubles matches and the first three singles draws to claim victory. BYUH faces either Concordia or Philadelphia out of the East region Wednesday.
» Hawaii Pacific's men's tennis team also advanced to Altamonte with a 5-0 win over Sonoma State yesterday at Central Oahu Regional Park.
HPU improved to 22-3, and will face a to-be-determined team.
