A 31-year-old man convicted of breaking into a rental car at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park has been sentenced to nine months in federal prison.
A U.S. district judge also sentenced Ashley Kai Larita on April 13 to three years of supervised release for unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle, a felony.
Larita, of no permanent address, was ordered to pay $632 in restitution to the victims. The break-in occurred on New Year's Day 2008 at the Kilauea Iki overlook parking lot.
Authorities arrested Larita after an investigation led by park rangers and a special agent. The park is for the enjoyment for residents and visitors, Superintendent Cindy Orlando said yesterday. “;We have zero tolerance for those who victimize others.”;
