Castle student is top driver

Varyn Higa of Castle High School was the overall winner in the recent 22nd annual Tesoro Hawaii Operation Driver Excellence statewide student competition.
About 40 students from 23 high schools participated in the driving competition that tested their safety knowledge.
The state Department of Education, Hawaii Association for Safety and Traffic Educators and Tesoro Hawaii coordinated the event at Radford High School and Aloha Stadium.
Tesoro awarded fuel cards worth up to $300 to winning students, and $150 for their driving instructors, with cash prizes of up to $1,000 for the top three school teams.
Students were judged in a written examination and a road test and through an obstacle course.
“;It's always tragic when we hear about crashes involving young drivers,”; said Eric Lee, Tesoro's senior regional manager for retail.
“;Tesoro Hawaii wants to be a part of the solution by providing students a safe environment to learn how to be better drivers.”;
