UH ends productive spring

Time is rarely a coach's friend.

Even when practices have been productive, there always seem to be a few more points they'd like to squeeze in if there were only a few more hours.

For example, Hawaii's defensive coaches spent spring practice evaluating personnel and installing the packages while giving the Warriors a sneak peak at some of the schemes they'll face early in the season.

More than enough to fill the practice scripts over the last month.

“;The first two weeks we really installed heavy, so the last two weeks we've been repping it out and getting to know the details and adjustments,”; Dave Aranda said last week as he approached the end of his first spring as the Warriors' defensive coordinator. “;There's still other things that need to be inserted, but I feel the base of our defense is in.

“;You'd like for spring to get a look at people, you'd like to get looks at the Army option, the USC power, the Colorado quick-throwing game. ... You have to juggle your time and there's not enough time.”;

The time for on-field teaching this spring ended Friday night with the Warrior Bowl scrimmage at Ching Field.

With 15 practices behind them, the coaching staff will meet with the players over the next week to discuss their roles with the team entering the summer to solidify a depth chart and trim the roster to the fall camp limit of 105.

“;We'll make some decisions,”; head coach Greg McMackin said after Friday's scrimmage. “;Everybody out there is a player, you just have to do the tough thing and it's a numbers thing.”;

While the spring answered some questions for the coaches, the program's most visible position remains in question going into the summer. Incumbent starting quarterback Bryant Moniz missed the final three weeks of the spring on personal leave, and McMackin said the junior will soon rejoin the competition.

Shane Austin, the most experienced quarterback of the group, remained first in the practice rotation in place of Moniz. Freshman David Graves shared the first-team reps with Austin on Friday guiding the offense to two touchdowns on drives highlighted by the running game. Senior Brent Rausch and freshman Cayman Shutter also had their moments over the last month to stay in the hunt.

The defense emphasized forcing turnovers and came away with three interceptions in the scrimmage, highlighting the good news-bad news aspect of intrasquad competitions.

“;It shows that it's really competitive because there were plays made on both sides of the ball, big-time hits,”; McMackin said, pausing to point toward cornerback Steve Stepter, who delivered the biggest blow of the night, “;and big plays on offense. We're moving in the right direction.”;

Stepter and Kawika Ornellas played a more prominent role with three of the Warriors' top cornerbacks out of action, which also forced others into more playing time.

“;Our twos were also our threes and fours,”; Aranda said of the secondary. “;Real proud of those guys, they were able to do what they needed to do. We're down to bare bones and (Rich Miano and Chris Tormey) coached them up.”;

Special teams is far advanced over a year ago simply by having kickers on the roster. This time last year, neither kicker Scott Enos nor punter Alex Dunnachie were enrolled in school. Both finished the spring with solid performances as Enos hit field goals of 27 and 47 yards.

“;We have veterans now,”; McMackin said. “;We had seven starters back last year, we have 17 back this year and we played without several of our players (due to injuries).

“;I feel we have some depth and we're young. That's what I like about this team, they're young and hungry and competitive.”;
