UH golfers open in ninth

T.J. Kua shared fourth but the rest of his Hawaii teammates struggled as the Rainbow Warriors started off the 49th Western Athletic Conference men's golf championships in last place at the Rio Secco Golf Club in Henderson, Nev.

Kua carded a 3-under 69, sharing fourth with two others, five strokes behind leader Timothy Madigan of New Mexico State. Kua's round included seven birdies.

Hawaii finished at 302, 21 strokes behind leader and host Nevada in the nine-team event that concludes tomorrow.

Sisto earns WAC honor

Sophomore Matt Sisto was named the pitcher of the week in Western Athletic Conference baseball yesterday, the sixth weekly honor this season for a Rainbows hurler.

Sisto threw 5 1/3 shutout innings in the 1-0 victory over Nevada in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader. He retired 12 of 13 batters after coming on in relief in the second inning.

BYUH, HPU host regionals

Brigham Young-Hawaii and Hawaii Pacific will both host first-round West Region matches in Division II men's and women's tennis Thursday.

The West 1 opener is at the BYUH courts. The third-ranked Seasiders women (28-0) host Cal State Stanislaus (8-5) at 2 p.m. while the No. 29 Seasiders men (19-3) meet UC San Diego (12-10) at 9:30 a.m.

The West 2 opener is at the Central Oahu Regional Park tennis complex. The sixth-ranked HPU men (18-2) face Sonoma State (7-10) at 10 a.m. while the 11th-ranked Lady Sea Warriors (18-3) meet UC San Diego (13-7) at 1:30 p.m.

The winners advance to the NCAA men's and women's national championships in Altamonte Springs, Fla., beginning May 12.
