Perry & Price keep KSSK No. 1, but sister station gains
POSTED: Saturday, May 01, 2010
Michael W. Perry and Larry Price are still the kings of morning radio among the overall listening audience and among 25- to 54-year-old adults, but their 27-year-old radio show on KSSK-FM 92.3/AM 590 is no longer the only morning show with double-digit ratings in the adult demographic. The accompanying chart reflects listening among those 12 and older.
It is the first time in a decade or longer that a second morning show has received a double-digit percent- age of the adult audience, according to data released yesterday by Arbitron Inc.
Sister-station KDNN-FM 98.5 and the “;Island 98-5”; morning team of Rory Wild, Gregg Hammer and Crystal Akana are No. 2 in the morning in the 25-to-54 demographic with a 10.3 share to Perry and Price's 18.1. KDNN's rise compares to a more than 2 share-point loss for Perry and Price, who had a 20.4 share a year ago.
KDNN also has risen to No. 1 from No. 6 a year ago among 18- to 34-year-olds, with 15.4 percent of morning listeners.
“;We're obviously very excited about the growth on 'Island,' “; said Chuck Cotton, Hawaii vice president and general manager of Clear Channel Communications Inc., who added that “;KSSK continues to do very well.”;
Wild, Hammer and Akana were transferred from the morning show at KIKI-FM 93.9 almost a year ago.
Morning shows generally drive and derive the bulk of a station's advertising revenue, and dramatic upward or down movement is unusual.
The KSSK simulcast of the Perry and Price show is perennially No. 1 and the second- through fifth-ranked stations often swap places, such as the move of KRTR-FM 96.3 to No. 3 from No. 2 a year ago and KINE-FM's move to No. 5 from No. 4 among adults 25 to 54.
Following personnel adjustments, it was the first full rating period for Dave Lancaster's morning show partnership with “;Sista”; Sherry Clifton on KRTR, as well as for Lina Girl and Augie Tulba on KCCN, and “;we're really pleased with their debut (ratings) books,”; said Wayne Maria, an operations manager at Cox Radio Hawaii, adding that KRTR is No. 1 with female listeners.
KCCN-FM 100.3, typically among the top five, dipped to a tie for sixth-ranked morning show with KUCD-FM 101.9 among the 25-to-54 audience. KCCN was third a year ago while KUCD, or “;Star 101-9,”; was No. 15.
The KUMU-FM 94.7 morning show rose to No. 4 from No. 8; and KKEA-AM 1420 rose to No. 8 from No. 18 a year ago. Hosted by Bobby Curran, the AM sports-talk show typically demonstrates its strongest performance during University of Hawaii Warrior football season, but its showing from the Jan. 7 through March 31 rating period may partially be due to the employment drama surrounding former UH basketball coach Bob Nash.
Long-lagging KQMQ-FM 93.1 held on to the ninth-ranked morning show position attained in the fall, after rising from a low of 18th in the spring survey.
There are no top 10 adult morning shows among stations owned by Salem Media of Hawaii Inc. However, “;on the ratings, we do our own little thing, we're happy,”; said General Manager Jeff Coelho. Salem's classic hits KKOL-FM 107.9, (formerly KGMZ), is No. 8 among all listeners, while adult-standards KHUI-FM 99.5 “;The Jewel,”; slipped to a 10th-place tie from No. 8 a year ago. Coelho says the dip may be due to locations of residents who received and recorded their listening habits in Arbitron diaries.
