New football wing at UH dedicated

The new football wing at the UH athletic department was christened with a dedication and blessing yesterday morning.

The $1.3 million renovation of the third-floor offices began in January and includes a new reception area, 12 coaches offices, a video room and separate conference rooms for the offense and defense.

“;This is a great day for our football program,”; coach Greg McMackin, with chancellor Virginia Henshaw, said at the ceremony. “;This is going to provide a great environment for our coaches and players for a teaching and learning situation. ... This is going to be great for recruiting.”;

The coaches will begin moving in next month.

 

UH's Nelson tops in WAC tennis

Hawaii's John Nelson was named coach of the year and four Rainbow Warriors earned all-conference honors at the Western Athletic Conference tennis tournament banquet last night in Fresno, Calif.

Dennis Lajola and Andreas Weber were named to the first team for singles, and Leo Rosenberg on the second team. Weber also was a first-team doubles selection with partner Philipp Eberhard.

For the Rainbow Wahine, doubles partners Sophie Kobuch and Katarina Poljakova were on the first team.

 

Bids out to golf with UH coach

A round of golf with members of the University of Hawaii football coaching staff is among the online bid items for the inaugural Howard K. Oda/Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance benefit golf tournament.

» Washington head coach Steve Sarkisian is the biggest name to commit to the All-Poly football camp, June 24-26 at Kaimuki. Other coaches signed up include Viliami Tuivai (Boise State), Brian Cabral (Colorado), Mike Tuiasosopo (Arizona), Nick Holt (Washington) and Keith Uperesa (Nicholls State). UH coaches have not committed yet.

Dolans lead kayakers at trials

Hawaii's Ryan and Patrick Dolan have earned spots on the U.S. Canoe/Kayak national team that will compete at this summer's World Championships in Poland.

Rayan Dolan (Maryknoll '08) won the 200-meter K-1 event at Sunday's U.S. Canoe/Kayak Sprint Trials in Chula Vista, Calif. He teamed with his brother Patrick (Maryknoll '06), Brandon Woods (Mid-Pacific '02) and Morgan House teamed to win the 1,000 K-4 event with a time that qualified for the U.S. for the event in next month's World Cup, part of the European Tour. The Dolan brothers also teamed to win the 1,000 K-2 race.

Also, two members of the Hawaii Canoe/Kayak Team were named to the junior national team following the trials. Shawn Kahookele, who won the 500 K-1 event, and Tajana Perrin, third in the 200 K-1, will compete on the junior tour this summer.

 

Gymnast Wong wins U.S. title

Makana Wong took overall honors at the Level 5 (10 year-old) division of the U.S. Men's Gymnastics Region 1 Championships held in San Diego. Wong won the pommel horse, vault and high bar.

Joshua Yee was third overall in the 14-15 year-old division. Yee advances the Level 10 Junior Olympic Championships next month in Knoxville, Tenn.
